Take a quick typing test to measure your
words per minute (WPM) and accuracy, then keep practicing to watch
your typing speed climb.
Take a typing test in seconds
There's nothing to download and no account required. Hit the button above, and you will get a short passage to type - a real quote from a book, movie or song. When you finish, you'll see your typing speed in words per minute along with your accuracy, so you know exactly where you stand.
Unlike typing tests built from random word lists, TypeRacer uses real sentences with punctuation, capital letters and numbers. That makes your score a much better reflection of how fast you type in everyday writing, emails and chat.
How to improve your typing speed
Focus on accuracy first
Every mistake costs you time to notice and fix. Slow down until you can type cleanly, and speed will follow naturally.
Keep your fingers on the home row
Rest your fingers on ASDF and JKL; and reach for each key with the same finger every time. Touch typing builds muscle memory so you no longer need to look at the keyboard.
Read ahead
Fast typists read a word or two ahead of what they're typing, so their fingers never have to wait for their eyes.
Practice a little every day
Short, regular sessions beat occasional marathons. A few typing tests a day is enough to see steady gains in your WPM.
Make it competitive
Once you're comfortable, race live opponents from around the world. A little friendly competition is one of the best ways to push past a plateau.
What is a good typing speed?
- Under 30 WPM: beginner - a great place to start practicing.
- 40 WPM: about the average typing speed.
- 60–70 WPM: fast, and comfortable for most jobs.
- 100+ WPM: elite - you'll be at home in our competitive races.
